Aucher Frères Captain’s Piano 1850

1850 Captains Piano

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the French company of Aucher Frères pioneered strengthening the wooden frames of ship’s pianos with metal beams.

This example is from 1850 and again we see the classic folding keyboard, lifting up into the cabinet. Though with the pedals and the straight strung harp, the whole piece is a little grander than the usual size for ships — perhaps that’s why this one is known as a Captain’s Piano?
